Ukilen Union pedestrian car ban

The Ukilen Union pedestrian car ban was a widely controversial bill in 2024 that continued from a draft 2 years earlier in 2022 that would ban the interprovincial usage of pedestrian cars in favour of all other forms of transportation, primarily the networks of public transportation in Turku and connecting to the city. This ban coincided with the closing of Turku International Airport, the only major airport serving the area around the city, for a 10 year-long renovation.

When the ban was announced, Turku Public Rail, the government owned company who operates half of all the rail and bus networks in Turku, had also announced the lowering of ticket prices and expanded their free lines to reach downtown Turku. They also announced in collaboration with GreenGreen Transportation, who owned a quarter of the remaining rail a new payment method for their payed lines that worked with both companies lines in and out of Turku.
