Utopia (game)

Utopia (Azkali: Tomangai, a pun on the word for disease in Azkali, Tomagnai) is a 2005 survival horror game developed by the Azkali game studio Amakato. It was released in Azkali in 2005 under the name Tomangai, with a beta being released in early 2004. In 2009, it was translated into Baphian and Noellastani by Faucet, Oikan by [Placeholder], and Loremese by [Placeholder], before being translated into various other languages as part of the 2013 re-release of the game, under the name Utopia on Fume.

In 2019, the game was adapted into a play by the Turku Womens Theatre Company, under the name Another Utopia.

Currently, a sequel to Utopia is under development, tentatively entitled "More Utopia".

Gameplay

At the start of the game, the player can choose one of three playable healer characters: Dhanelu, Artemi, and Klaira. At the beginning of the game, the player can only play as either Dhanelu and Artemi: Klaira is unlocked after completing either Dhanelu's or Artemi's storyline. The unselected characters are also present within the storyline of Utopia. Utopia takes place over 12 in game days. Throughout the day, each character recieves quests from non playable characters: however, the story will continue regardless of whether they are completed or not, with the exception of the main quest on the first day for each character.

Each character has a group of NPCs that are called the "Bound". If the player does not complete their main quest during the day, one of their bound gets infected and dies. Regardless of which character the player chooses, they can also save the bound for the other playable characters, leading to a seperate ending. Every district within the town (which is unnamed) is named after after Kali (and later mixed human, kaneed, and kali biology in the 2013 re-release) body parts.

Plot

Overview

Regardless of which character the player chooses, each character attempts to cure a plague known as the Black Death (Sasut Reitem in Azkali) which infects a small remote town in the steppe. Although there are three playable characters, there is only one main story, which is seen through the point of views of the individual characters.

Playable Characters

There are 3 playable characters in Utopia:

• Dhanelu - a notable and promenant thanatologist from the capital, who at the start of the game comes to the town to meet the supposedly immortal Maki Tainu (later renamed to Marcus Tain in foreign translations), who supposedly has lived for upwards of 200 years. Upon arriving at the town, he meets Maki's brother Kiori (renamed to George in foreign translations), who informs him of Maki's murder the day before Dhanelu arrived. He starts searching for the murderer of Maki, and finds out that a disease called the Black Death killed him.
