1980 Azkali Plague

The 1980 Azkali Plague was one of the most recent pandemics of the bubonic plague, caused by a novel strain of the bacterium Yersinia pestis, and by far the most devastating and deadly disease epidemics in world history. While affecting many countries in boh Ukilen and Brausia, including Sunteria, Loremesia, Alloti, and even isolated outbreaks in Xjetjeŋ, by far the most affected nation was Azkali, which saw between 19-23 million people dead — approximately 45-55% of Azkali's population at the time — due to the pandemic. The plague also was the primary cause of the Azkali societal collapse, which saw even more destruction and death across Azkali and Sunteria.

The bacterium that would eventually cause the 1980 pandemic was first isolated from the town of Harakoniaz on the 28th of Dhetzemer, 1977, from the at the time fifteen year old Zatsie Koro. Early the next year, an epidemic starting from Harakoniaz would spread across much of eastern Azkali, still in the midst of a devastating civil war, being referred to as the 1978 Bubonic plague epidemic at the time. Until the main pandemic, hundreds of cases of plague would continue to be reported.

The 1980 pandemic can be presumed to have started in Arril of 1980, due to a sudden outbreak of the plague in the Aketzereu neighborhood of Atzogui. As the plague spread further, it began to be used, particularly by the National Society Front, as a biological weapon. Uncontrolled spread of the plague began in Uni of that year, due to the widespread lack of antibiotics, dense living conditions, and both purposeful and accidental contamination of civilian population centers with the infection.
